Casting Cameos with Resin: DIY Tutorial

I think I'm getting the hang of casting cameos in resin.  I can't wait to buy new molds and a new supply of resin and pigments.

Want to try casting your own?

Here's what you need:

Ice Resin Kit (comes with Parts A and B and mixing cups)

Molds (can be found on Amazon, Etsy, eBay, etc)

Mold Release Spray or Cooking Spray

Toothpick

Wax paper to cover surface

Mixing cup

Mixing stick

Paper towel for quick cleanups

Instructions:

1) Make sure your molds are clean and dry.

2) Spray your molds with mold release spray or cooking spray this helps the resin come out easier when it is dry. I prefer cooking spray. It is cheaper, more natural and easy to use.

It's also good to lightly coat your hands with the spray in case you get any resin on them. It will wash off easier.

3) Pour Ice Resin Part A into to mixing cup

4) Add an equal amount of Ice Resin Part B into mixing cup

5) Mix thoroughly

6) Add desired amount of color pigment to resin, mix thoroughly

7) Carefully pour or scoop your first color of resin into molds. I pour just a little bit in at a time them push it into all the cracks and crevices with a toothpick (actually a drink umbrella stick as shown in the picture, I was out of toothpicks and the umbrella is longer). The molds are tiny and have small details, be careful to get it just in the cameo face area and not on the cameo background. Touch up any overflow with a tiny piece paper towel if needed. Wipe resin off all the outer areas.

8) Let resin dry overnight.

9) Repeat steps 3-8 for second color of resin.

10) After letting the second color dry overnight touch the back of the cameos. If they still feel tacky let them dry longer. If they are smooth to the touch you can pop them out of the molds and see how they look.

11) If they turned out as planned you now have cameos you can craft or make jewelry with.
